College students have got to be some of the hardest working people in our society. With the countless hours of studying, multiple cups of coffee per day and 15 pound backpacks full of books, a college student can build up an immense amount of stress. This is why a little fun on the weekends is more than essential in the life of a college student.

For college kids craving adventure, one of the best places to go in San Luis Obispo is Big Falls by Lopez Lake. The hike up to these awesome waterfalls and pools is about 20 to 45 minutes, depending on how far you want to go, and is fairly easy. Once you reach the pools there are a bunch of surrounding rocks that you can relax and lay out on.

If you are the really daring and adventurous type then you can climb up to the cliffs, ranging from 10 to 45 feet, and jump off into the deep pools of cool water below. This is  the main attraction for college kids to the falls. The rush of adrenaline after jumping releases all the built up stress from the previous week. It’s just a bonus that you look like a badass if you jump off the highest one.

The drive out to Big Falls is a little over an hour but make sure to bring a car that can manage going through shallow rivers. There are about five small rivers on the way out there, but this is part of what makes the trip so fun!

Other things to be sure to bring:

  • bathing suit
  • towels
  • good shoes for hiking
  • sunscreen
  • portable music player
  • and of course, beverages!

Big Falls is one of those places that not a lot of people know about so it’s never too crowded and there’s never a line to jump. This place has got to be crossed off your SLO Graduation Bucket List! Just be sure to watch our for Poison Oak!
